Why implement embodied writing into YOUR classroom practice?

Embodied writing practices meet real world classroom needs, in real time, and in ways that optimize real student learning preferences.

  •  Distractions abound and students come to us from a multitude of backgrounds and with a diverse set of learning needs.

  • It can be extremely challenging and time-consuming to find effective, engaging ways to implement literacy instruction within our classrooms, especially for literature-resistant adolescents and teens.

  • Teachers are habitually asked to do more with less (~less resources, less time, less training~) and yet the need for providing outcomes-based, universally-designed literacy instruction at ALL education levels is proving to be more and more critical --especially as 7-12 grade teachers are now considering ways to implement "science of reading" initiatives into existing curricula.

Embodied writing practices provide common ground for introducing scaffolded, transferrable, recursive writing skills at all educational levels (K-20+).

  • Though we recognize the value of writing across the curriculum and providing opportunities to continuously modify and build upon a solid writing foundation, we very rarely have the opportunity to consider common practices through which these skills can be introduced and revisited in multiple formats, across disciplines, and over time; in other words, embodied writing provides a common approach!

  • Contemporary writing instruction must strike a balance between introducing key concepts AND building essential skills --and it must do so in a way that resonates with the learner to increase engagement and encourage transfer of skills; embodied writing, with its learner-centered focus, is one way to

  • While most of us intuitively understand that engaging the whole body and mind in learning is an effective way to improve student interest and retention, understanding how to do this with writing instruction can feel overwhelming, inauthentic, and even impossible...

  • Many educators already place writing and literacy at the center of their lesson planning but struggle to find innovative, relatable ways to present these lessons and concepts in ways beyond traditional paper-and-pencil, formulaic writing instruction...

  • Many ELA teachers and writing instructors are ready to shift their approach to teaching if it means getting better results in the classroom.
